Mongolia Border Crossing Points
Mongolia has officially 44 border points according to Government resolution and protocol between Mongolia and neighbor 2 countries (Russia and China) as below:
– 29 border points with Russia
– 13 border points with China
– 2 Air border crossing to Mongolia
As of 2018, there was 2 air border crossing points, 10 operating border points with Russia and 13 border points with China. And then total 25 points were operating. Rest 21 points are not yet opened due to lack of usage. Mongolia is big country with many border crossings, but not all of them are open to international travelers.
- There are 3 rail border points (international-2, mutual-1),
- 20 auto road border points (international permanent border point 7, mutual permanent 9 border points, mutual temporary 4 border points),
- 2 air border crossing points (Buyant Ukhaa and Choibalsan)
Mongolia - International Air Border Crossing:
- Chinggis Khaan International Airport (formerly Buyant Ukhaa Airport) for ULAANBAATAR
It is main gateway for international passengers to Mongolia, located 15km from Ulaanbaatar which is capital city of Mongolia. - A regional airport of Choibalsan for Eastern province of Mongolia
This is a small airport located in Choibalsan, the capital of Dornod Province in Mongolia.
Mongolia - International Rail Border Points:
- Sukhbaatar – Naushki with RUSSIA
Located at the Sukhbaatar soum, Selenge province. This international checkpoint is permanently operating one of only 2 rail border points in Mongolia. This permanent border is 24-hour operation port. - Zamiin Uud – Erlian with CHINA
There are currently two border points with China open to foreigners, one of them is between Zamyn-Üüd and Erlian. Located at the border of Zamiin Uud settlement and Erlian town of China. This border is open year-round (except Mongolian and Chinese holidays) Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm.
Mongolia - International Auto Crossing Checkpoints:
- Tsagaannuur – Tashanta with RUSSIA
Located at the Tsagaannuur soum, Bayan Ulgii province in the far west Mongolia. This is international permanent checkpoint borders with Tashanta checkpoint, Altai Republic. Checkpoint started to operate since 2006 and allow foreigners to cross the border. The crossings are open from 9am to noon and 2pm to 6pm daily except holidays. It’s 100km from Bayan-Ulgii town. - Ereentsav – Solovyevsk with RUSSIA
Located at the border of Chuluunkhoroot soum, Dornod province in the far east Mongolia. This permanently operating international checkpoint is open to foreigners. Open every day from 9am-13pm and 14pm-18pm. However this is only open to foreign foot traffic. NO Foreign vehicles allowed. Even using out contacts with Mongolia Expeditions permission was not obtainable. - Altanbulag – Khyakhta with RUSSIA
Located at the Altanbulag soum, Selenge province in the directly north of Mongolia. This permanent border is 24-hour operation port. Altanbulag checkpoint is also most important international border crossing between Mongolia and Russia. Renovating of the Altanbulag border checkpoint will make three entrance lanes into eight and four exit lanes into 15. - Zamiin Uud – Erlian wit CHINA
Located at the border of Zamiin Uud settlement and Elian town of China. Now the most important international border crossing between Mongolia and the People’s Republic of China, via Erenhot. The Zamyn-Üüd–Èrlián crossing is open daily, but note that on holidays only the train (not the road) crossing will operate. For vehicles the border is open 8am to 6pm. Currently, 900 passengers, 100 passenger vehicles and seven freight vehicles cross the Zamyn-Uud border check point an hour. - Bulgan – Takashiken with CHINA
Located at the Bulgan soum, Khovd province. This is one of the international permanent border point to/from Takashiken, China. This border is open year-round (except Mongolian and Chinese holidays) Monday to Friday from 9am to 6pm. Around 60-200 passengers cross this border per day depending on season.
There are buses shuttle crossing border from Takashiken to/from Khovd since 2017. The village of Bulgan is a five-hour drive to Khovd on a newly paved road. Khovd is one hour behind Xīnjiāng. - Bichigt – Khatavch with CHINA
Located at the Erdenetsagaan soum, Sukhbaatar province. This is one of the international permanent checkpoint borders with Zuun Uzemchin Khoshuu, Xiliin Gol province, Inner Mongolia. Its 285km from Sukhbaater town center. - Sumber – Arxa/Aershan with CHINA
Located at the Khalkhgol soum, Dornod province. There is a water border with Rashaan town, Hyangan province, Inner Mongolia. This international check point operates temporary 76 days per year.
